Caustic soda flakes vs pearls vs liquid: which should you buy?

Flakes, pearls and liquid caustic soda are the same chemical — NaOH, CAS 1310-73-2 — in three physical forms. Choosing between them is a logistics and handling decision, not a chemistry decision. Here is the honest comparison we give buyers who ask.

The three forms

  • Flakes — molten caustic solidified on a cooled drum and broken into thin flakes, typically 98–99% NaOH. The standard form in international trade.
  • Pearls (prills, beads) — sprayed and cooled into uniform spheres of about 0.5–2 mm, usually 99% min. Free-flowing and low-dust.
  • Liquid (lye, 48–50%) — caustic solution in water. Ready to dose, but roughly half of what you ship and store is water.

How to decide

  • Importing or distributing? Take flakes — the best combination of assay, shelf life and freight economy, and the form your downstream buyers will recognise.
  • Dosing automatically? Pearls flow like sand and do not bridge in hoppers; flakes can interlock. If your plant was designed for pearls, stay with pearls.
  • Using thousands of tonnes near a producer? Liquid can win on handling — but only if you have heated, lined tankage and short freight. Across an ocean, solid almost always wins.
  • Winter routes through cold climates? Remember liquid 50% starts to crystallise around 12 °C; flakes do not care about the cold, only about moisture.

Our plant specialises in flakes, in 25 kg bags and 1 MT jumbo bags — see the specification and current test data. If your process needs pearls or liquid, tell us in your enquiry and we will confirm what can be arranged before you commit.
