Caustic soda flakes for Indonesia, supplied plant-direct
Indonesian buyers know this material as soda api, natrium hidroksida or soda kaustik. The chemistry is the same everywhere; what differs is everything that happens between the plant and your warehouse. Three questions decide whether an import runs smoothly — will the container clear without sitting at the port, will the documents stand up on inspection, and will container two match container one. This page answers all three, because those are what cost you money.
What Indonesian importers normally specify
Most enquiries we receive from Indonesia are for flake caustic soda in 25 kg bags, often palletised for a distribution warehouse. We produce 99% min as the plant's grade, so it is the same plant, the same packing options and the same document set every time.
Typical values are from a production sample tested in March 2026 by an independent CMA- and CNAS-accredited laboratory under report TQT03-1051-2026; every item passed GB/T 209-2018.
| Parameter | Typical value | GB/T 209-2018 limit |
|---|---|---|
| NaOH content | 99.1% | ≥ 99.0% |
| Sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃) | 0.3% | ≤ 0.8% |
| Sodium chloride (NaCl) | 0.01% | ≤ 0.05% |
| Iron oxide (Fe₂O₃) | 0.0006% | ≤ 0.008% |
| Appearance | White, lustrous flakes | Pass |
If your receiving laboratory tests more than assay, say so on the enquiry. Carbonate matters to soap makers, iron to textile and white-product buyers, chloride to corrosion-sensitive plants — we would rather answer the specification you actually test against than quote NaOH alone. The full sheet is on the caustic soda flakes product page.
The clearance checklist: your side and ours
Indonesian import rules are strict about who imports and about paperwork being in the right form before the container lands. Almost nothing that goes wrong at Tanjung Priok or Tanjung Perak is about the goods themselves. This is the split we work to, and we would rather send you our half of it in advance than watch a container sit on demurrage.
Your side, as importer of record
- NIB with the right API class. Your business identity number (NIB, issued through Indonesia's online single submission system) carries your import identification — API-U if you import to trade or distribute, API-P if you import for your own production. A consignee without a valid API cannot clear the shipment.
- NPWP, and a consignee that matches it. The name and tax details on the bill of lading must line up with the NIB/NPWP holder. A mismatch between the party named on the B/L and the party licensed to import is the most common single cause of a hold.
- Hazardous-materials handling at your site. Caustic soda is a corrosive hazardous material (B3 in Indonesian terms), which brings storage and inland-transport requirements at your end. Ask your broker whether your site needs a hazardous-material registration or a licensed B3 warehouse.
- Documents in Bahasa Indonesia. For hazardous chemicals, an Indonesian-language MSDS and GHS-conforming warning labels are expected. We issue the English MSDS as standard and can supply the Bahasa Indonesia version with the shipping documents.
- A licensed customs broker (PPJK) and a letter of authorisation if the broker files the import declaration on your behalf.
Our side, as exporter
- Commercial invoice and packing list built on exactly the same data as the bill of lading: HS 2815.11, net and gross weight, package count, marks and seal number.
- Bill of lading consigned precisely as you instruct, with the consignee name and tax number you give us — not a default name from our side.
- Form E certificate of origin under the ASEAN–China Free Trade Area, so your broker can claim preferential duty treatment where the rules of origin are met. The rate that applies to your entry is confirmed by your broker against the classification you declare — the classification and duty mechanics are explained in HS 2815.11, customs and duty.
- Batch certificate of analysis for the actual shipment, plus the MSDS, both issued before the vessel sails.
- Dangerous-goods documentation for the export leg: UN 1823, Class 8, with compliant packaging and the packing certificate the shipping line requires.
- Seal number and loading photographs taken at the plant and sent with the documents, so your broker and your receiving team both know what is in the container before it opens.
Where an Indonesian import usually goes wrong
- A consignee mismatch. The container arrives consigned to one company while the API and NPWP belong to another. That has to be settled before the bill of lading is issued, not after the ship sails.
- Labels and MSDS in English only. Bahasa Indonesia versions are expected for hazardous material, and their absence is exactly the kind of detail that moves a container into a slower inspection channel.
- Wooden pallets without the ISPM 15 mark. Wood packaging should carry the IPPC mark, and Tanjung Priok inspects wood packaging more often than most regional ports. We can load on plastic pallets, or on wood with the required treatment and marking.
- Documents that arrive after the vessel. Send your broker the invoice, packing list, Form E and MSDS while the container is still at sea, so the import declaration can be prepared in advance.
- Leaving clearance late. Indonesian rules set a deadline for clearing goods after arrival — forwarded industry guidance commonly cites about thirty days — and cargo left uncleared can ultimately be treated as unclaimed. Confirm the deadline that applies to your entry with your broker and diarise it.
We cannot clear your goods for you. What we can do is make sure nothing on our side of the fence is missing, pre-alert the documents, and tell you honestly when a requirement cannot be met — rather than let you discover it at the port. Our document set is listed under documents and downloads.
Ports, packing and shipping
We load at Tianjin (Xingang), the export port for our region, and quote FOB Tianjin as standard, with CFR and CIF to your destination port on request. The Indonesian destinations our buyers name most often are Tanjung Priok (Jakarta), Tanjung Perak (Surabaya), Belawan (Medan) and Makassar; on-carriage to the other islands follows from those gateways.
| Packing | Container | Typical net weight |
|---|---|---|
| 25 kg PP/PE bags, loose loaded | 20' FCL | 25 MT (1,000 bags) |
| 25 kg PP/PE bags on pallets | 20' FCL | 22 MT |
| 1 MT jumbo bags | 20' FCL | 20 MT (20 bags) |
| 25 kg PP/PE bags | 40' FCL | 27 MT (weight-limited) |
Two practical notes for Indonesia. First, caustic soda is a dangerous good, so bookings are normally placed ten to fourteen days before the scheduled sailing — the earlier an order is confirmed, the more sailings you have to choose from. Second, a 40-foot container reaches its weight limit before it runs out of space, so a heavier load usually means a second 20-foot rather than a bigger box. Loading and packing detail is on the packing and loading page, and storage guidance is in the handling guide.
Why Indonesia keeps importing
Indonesia is one of the largest caustic soda importing countries in the world, and the reason is structural rather than seasonal: domestic chlor-alkali output has trailed consumption for years, and the industries that consume caustic soda are the ones the country is expanding.
- The demand base. Indonesian consumption passed one million tonnes in 2024, and published market-research estimates put it around 1.2 million tonnes by 2033 — mid-single-digit annual growth, not a spike.
- Where it is consumed. Pulp and paper is the largest single end use (published estimates place it at roughly a fifth to a quarter of national demand), followed by palm oil and oleochemicals, then alumina and metals processing, then water treatment and environmental applications.
- The growth edge. Mineral processing — bauxite and nickel — is expanding fastest as Indonesia pushes downstream processing, while soap, detergents, textiles and chemical manufacturing in Java's industrial corridors provide a steady base load.
- Domestic supply. New chlor-alkali capacity has been announced, including a large plant at Cilegon reported in 2025, but plants of that size take years to build and commission. Until it is running, imports remain the balancing supply, and China is the largest single source of them.
The figures above are published industry estimates from market-research and trade-data sources, not our own measurements. Treat them as a direction of travel and verify the current data for your own planning — we would rather point you at the shape of the market than hand you a number that has gone stale.

Questions Indonesian buyers ask us
What do I need in place to import caustic soda into Indonesia?
On your side: a NIB carrying the right API class (API-U for trading importers, API-P for your own production), an NPWP whose holder matches the consignee named on the bill of lading, a licensed customs broker, and hazardous-materials handling that suits a B3 corrosive solid. Bahasa Indonesia MSDS and GHS labels are normally expected. Confirm the final list with your broker for your entry; we prepare the export-side documents to match it.
Can you issue a Form E certificate of origin for Indonesia?
Yes. We issue Form E under the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area so that your broker can apply for preferential duty treatment where the rules of origin are met. China is the origin of the material and we state that in writing on the offer. The rate that applies to your entry is confirmed by your broker against the classification you declare, in your market, at the time of import.
Do you provide the MSDS and labels in Bahasa Indonesia?
We issue the English MSDS as standard and can supply a Bahasa Indonesia version together with the shipping documents, along with GHS-conforming labels in Bahasa Indonesia for hazardous material. Tell us at enquiry stage so it is built into the order rather than added once the container is already at the port.
Which Indonesian ports do you ship to?
FOB Tianjin (Xingang) as standard, with CFR and CIF quoted to Tanjung Priok, Tanjung Perak, Belawan, Makassar and other ports on request. We load 20-foot and 40-foot containers; heavy loads are usually better as 20-foot because a 40-foot box hits its weight limit first.
What is your minimum order for Indonesia?
Our standard supply unit is one 20-foot container, about 25 MT of 25 kg bags or 22 MT palletised. If you would rather test the material before committing to a container, say so on the enquiry and we will discuss what a trial quantity looks like for your port.
What grade do you supply for the Indonesian market?
99% min, from our own plant, on the same documents every shipment. It suits water treatment, detergents and general industrial use as well as buyers working to a tighter specification or a formulation limit. The specification page sets out the impurity limits.
Why flakes rather than liquid caustic soda for Indonesia?
Flakes store at ambient temperature in sealed bags, need no heated tanks, and cross between islands without concentration drift, which suits mid-scale manufacturers and distributors. Liquid 50% suits large continuous plants with a tank farm, and you pay freight on the water it contains. The comparison is set out in our flakes versus pearls versus liquid guide.
